A fire involving a container of lithium-ion batteries at the Port of Montreal prompted a temporary stay-at-home order for residents nearby on Monday.
The incident took place within one of the port’s terminals. The Port of Montreal reported that its Port Prevention and Security teams responded immediately.
"Our teams have been on-site since the start of the incident, which fortunately resulted in no injuries," the port stated.
They activated their emergency response plan and coordinated closely with the Montreal Fire Department, which is managing the situation.
The precautionary lockdown affected the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, adjacent to the port. However, city officials later lifted the order, confirming that the fire was under control.
"The preventive containment notice was issued due to a fire that is now managed,"
they announced. Authorities have reassured the public regarding safety.
"While firefighters may require additional time to complete their operations, tests have confirmed that there is no risk to public health and safety," the city reported.
